Practically all of you (and me) have a special someone who treats your home like a public park and your boundaries like a suggestion box. But in some families, the word "privacy" is met with the same confusion as a tax form in ancient Greek. For one Michigan homeowner, peace and quiet have been replaced by Tyler, the brother-in-law who appears at the door with the frequency of a bad weather alert and the subtlety of a marching band. He never arrives when her husband is home, always when she's alone, and his explanations are as vague as his intentions. He's either just checking something, just wandering around, just making himself at home without ever just actually living there.

Tyler's inspecting the garage like he's casing the joint, staring at the thermostat as if it might reveal a family secret, and parking himself at the kitchen table with the attitude of someone waiting for room service. The real trick, though, is how the rest of the family responds. Her husband shrugs, her mother-in-law accuses her of being cold, and everyone else acts as if the real crime is wanting a heads-up before a relative strolls through the door. In this household, family unity apparently means never questioning why someone is lurking in your laundry room.
